Boyfriend Suspected in Murder of Mother, 9-Year-Old Daughter in Waterbury

A 29-year-old mother and her 9-year-old daughter were killed in a Waterbury apartment on Friday morning, according to police, and the woman’s boyfriend has been taken into custody.

Officers responded to 21 Third Street just after 9 a.m. on Friday after neighbors found a 2-year-old child who lives in the home outside alone, screaming. When officers entered the apartment, they found 29-year-old Chaquinequea Brodie and her 9-year-old daughter dead in the apartment.

Brodie's 2-year-old daughter was not injured, according to police.

On Friday afternoon, police said they located 28-year-old Anthony Rutherford in the neighborhood where the crime happened and took him into custody as a suspect in the killings. Police said he a handgun in his possession when he was apprehended.

Deputy Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said Rutherford was in a relationship with Brodie recently and that relationship "became tumultuous" over the past few weeks.

Police did not say how the mother and daughter were killed.

Rutherford is due in court today to face charges, including two counts of murder, reckless endangerment, two counts of risk of injury to a child and a series of weapons charges, Spagnolo said.

He was held on $2.5 million bond.

Rutherford is not the father of either of the children, according to Spagnolo.
