West Hartford's unionized school bus drivers held an “informational” picket at the First Student bus yard on Thursday morning, the first job action since their nearly unanimous strike vote earlier this month.

The goal, the drivers and bus monitors said, is to draw attention to the labor dispute between their union, CSEA SEIU Local 2001, and first union.

The drivers, who have been working without a contract since Aug. 31, said the job action is about “respect.” The buses break down almost daily and they aren't safe, they said.

First Student refutes the claim, calling their maintenance and safety inspections “robust” and above industry standards.

The drivers also said they have been shorted pay.

Both sides are expected to continue negotiations on Friday, Sept. 28.

No strike deadline has been set.
