Thieves vandalized a West Haven church and stole thousands of dollars worth of religious items.

The First Lutheran Church of West Haven at 52 George Street was broken into sometime Monday night, according to Philip Krakowiak Sr., the church's minister.

The suspects smashed open just about every door in the church, Krakowiak said.

Several brass items, including vases and candle holders were stolen. The thieves also broke into the church's food pantry and stole food meant for families in need, according to Krakowiak.

The minister estimated the value of the stolen items and the cost to repair the damage at about $20,000.

Anyone who may have witnessed anything near the church Monday night is asked to call West Haven police.
