Westport Team to Compete in Little League World Series

    A dozen 11- to 13-year-olds from Westport are gearing up for the Little League World Series, where they will compete in Williamsport, Pa. this week.

    The Westport Little League team is representing all of New England and will compete in its first tournament game tonight at 7 p.m. They’ll be facing off against Nashville.

    If they win, they’ll go on to battle 14 other teams for the title of Little League world champion.

    The Westport team was undefeated all season, with a 6-0 record.

    U.S. competitors include teams from the Southwest, Northwest, Southeast, Northeast, West, Midwest, the Great Lakes and New England.

    Foreign teams hail from Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia, Mexico, New Asia-Pacific, Canada, Japan and Europe-Africa.

    U.S. teams have won more 33 titles in the previous 66 years of competition, more than any other region or country.

    Last year, Japan won, beating out Tennessee 12-2.

    Opening ceremonies were held today at 11 a.m. in preparation for the first day of competition. Four games will take place this afternoon and will be aired on ESPN.

    The tournament runs through Sunday, Aug. 25. The championship game will be held at 3 p.m.
