Windy Weather Leads to Power Issues

Overnight wind gusts brought down several trees onto power lines throughout the state. Eversource energy crews and tree cutters are now fanned throughout the state to clean up debris and restore power.

“Initially, I thought, maybe I didn’t pay the bill because that happens,” said Robin Jones, who woke up to a neighborhood power outage in Bloomfield. Bloomfield Police said a tree fell onto powerlines on Duncaster Road around 3:00 a.m.

Heavy winds are bringing down trees and wires and are causing thousands of power outages on Tuesday morning.

“It was just cold. Very cold,” said Jones. “I looked out the window – it was still dark – I looked out and saw nobody had power. The biggest stress is my poor daughter who’s trying to get ready for school, and there’s no water for her to fix her hair or brush her teeth or anything.”

The road closure forced school buses to turn around. Reynolds Onderdonk, a teacher at Windsor Locks High School, said he was running late because of detours. “I never think it’s such a great force that it’s going to endanger the trees falling,” says Onderdonk, surprised by the fallen tree during his commute. “It’s not like it’s a hurricane.”

Strong winds also knocked down a tree and power lines on Park Drive in Berlin. A car ran into that very tree soon after. In North Granby, on Granville Road, police say a tree fell onto a utility pole, where the weight and tension of that tree and pole snapped a second pole.

I saw the clocks were all flashing,” says Fritz Cabral, who lives down the street, “but the lights were still on, and I turned the tv on and the cable was still working. Usually, that goes out first around here.”

At one point, Eversource reported more than 3,000 outages early this morning. There have been no reported injuries.
