Winsted Couple Embezzled $50K from Elderly Client: Police

A Winsted couple is accused of embezzling money from an elderly woman while working for Companions and Homemakers.

According to Winsted Police, 45-year-old Terrance Sutherland and 43-year-old Mindy Sutherland turned themselves in on an active arrest warrant. Police say the pair embezzled around $50,000 from a 95-year-old client over a five-year period.

They area each charged with first-degree larceny and third-degree forgery.

Companions & Homemakers released a statement about the arrests on Wednesday:

“Because Companions & Homemakers’ first priority is the safety and security of our client, we have committed to the client, who continues to be our client, that they will be fully reimbursed for their financial loss due to any theft. We have worked closely with the client and cooperated fully with Winchester police in the arrest of, Mindy Sutherland, our former employee, who had previously cleared a comprehensive background check. We responded immediately by removing Ms. Sutherland when this issue was reported to us in March of this year and have worked continuously with the family and police since to develop the details that have resulted in the arrest.”
