Winsted Selectman Michael Renzullo faces weapons charges after he was pulled over for talking on his cell phone while driving.

Renzullo, 36, was stopped by police Saturday on Wetmore Avenue for the cell phone violation.  When Renzullo opened the car's center console to get the registration, the officer saw a hunting knife.

The officer also found Renzullo's car was unregistered.  He was charged with the cell phone violation, failure to register his vehicle and weapons possession.  Renzullo was released on a promise to appear and is due in Bantam Superior Court on Nov. 30.

Renzullo told the Register Citizen he had stored the knife in the console after a camping trip a couple of months ago and forgotten to remove it.  He estimated the length of the knife to be six or seven inches.

The newspaper also reports Renzullo contacted newly elected Mayor Candy Perez and five other selectmen to apologize.

Renzullo, a Democrat, was recently re-elected to his second term in office.
