Power Restored for All But 6,000 After Strong Storms

A series of rare strong February thunderstorms that came through Wednesday night into Thursday morning took down trees and has left around 6,800 houses and businesses in the dark, down from around 90,000 in the early hours of Thursday morning.

As of 7:00 a.m., power is out to 6,760 Eversource customers, down from around 89,000 at 3 a.m. on Thursday.

Most of the outages are in Greenwich, where 1,050 customers have no power as of 8:45 a.m. on Friday.

Eversource said crews are coming in to help from Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania and they expect to have power restored to most customers by 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

Eversource posted on its Facebook page that there is significant damage to the electrical system and crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power. They said they will be working through the day until power is restored.

Power was out for thousands of United Illuminating customers as well, but it has been restored.

Wires were down and roads were closed in several towns, including Killingly, Plainfield, Lebanon and Washington.

The American Red Cross is helping families who were displaced by the storms. They are helping six families, including 16 adults and nine children, after storms damaged their home on Putnam Street in Hartford. They are also helping one family because of storm damage to their home on Stonecastle Road in New Milford.

A tree fell into a house at Boulevard and Garfield Road in West Hartford. No one inside the home was injured, according to fire officials.

Trees are down in several areas, including on Hubbard Street, where a tree completely uprooted.
