Woman Abducted During Bridgeport Carjacking

Bridgeport police are searching for the suspect who they say stole a car with an elderly woman in the backseat.

The carjacking happened Wednesday night on Madison Avenue and McKinley Street. Police say her grandson had gone into a store to run an errand and left the car in park with her inside.

The suspect was caught on surveillance video minutes later, stealing the car and taking off. Josefa Avila, who is 69 years old and legally blind, was still in the backseat.

"I can’t imagine how frightened she was to actually go around for 30 minutes riding with a stranger knowing that she could be in danger," Elizabeth Diego said, who helps run a family business on Madison Avenue.

Police say the suspect eventually dropped the woman off on Fairfield Avenue, and she was able to get a ride back to her son's home on Perth Street. They say the suspect stole the woman’s cell phone, $70 in cash and her ID.

Police are using the surveillance video to search for a 2007 black Mazda 6 with a Connecticut license plate of 7AFRF2. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bridgeport Police.
