Babysitter Charged in Homicide of 3-Week-Old

Through tears, Jaleah Jayde Quintero's mother vowed that a family member will be in court each day their former babysitter appears on manslaughter charges in connection with the three-week-old baby girl's death.

Police started investigating on Dec. 5, after receiving a call to respond to the emergency room because baby Jaleah was unresponsive and had suspicious injuries, police said.

The little girl was pronounced dead later on the day she was brought to the hospital and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide. On Tuesday afternoon, officials said the cause of death was blunt-force trauma to the head.

Last Friday, police obtained an arrest warrant, charging the babysitter, Janell Campbell, 22, of 84 Winter Street in New Britain, with one count of second-degree manslaughter and one count of risk of injury to children in connection with her suspected actions related to the death of the baby, police said.

Campbell was taken into custody at her home at 10 a.m. on Monday and is being held on a $250,000 court-set bond.

On Tuesday, she appeared before a judge who commented that the "magnitude of this tragedy cannot be calculated."

Through tears, Jaleah's mother said on Tuesday that a member of the family will be at every court appearance Campbell makes.

During this first court appearance, she was sitting in the front row with Jaleah's grandmother, who promised to buy a Christmas ornament every year for the baby, just as they planned has she been there with them fro the holidays.

The warrant is sealed and police have not released any additional information.

Through their shock, the baby's family members said on Monday that Campbell is a good person and the don't known when or how this could have happened.
