Teacher Killed In Route 9 Crash

The victim is a 25-year-old Waterford woman.

A Canton High School teacher from Waterford was killed in a crash on Route 9 northbound in Middletown on Sunday.

M. Jaclyn King, 25, was killed when her 1986 Pontiac Fiero rolled over after it traveled onto the right shoulder and then struck a light pole near exit 11 in Middletown just before 4 p.m., State Police said.

King was not wearing a seat belt, according to the police report. She was partially ejected from the car.

A portion of the highway was closed for about three hours.

Police are investigating.

King had been teaching at Canton High School for two years and taught 9th and 11th grade English, according to her Web page on the high school Web site. She also taught at the district's alternative education program in the afternoon.

"She was at her best.  The kids were engaged, they were excited about what they were learning, so it's just a real loss for our entire school community," Supt. Kevin Case said.

King graduated from UConn's school of education in May 2009 and liked to be referred to as "Jack," according to a newsletter from Canton High School.

Grief counselors are at the school on Monday.
