Woman Seriously Injured by Hit-and-Run Driver in Waterbury

Waterbury police are looking for a hit-and-run driver after a 75-year-old woman was struck and seriously injured on Tuesday morning.

Geraldine Lapio was hit around 6:30 a.m. near Nottingham Terrace and Cooke Street, according to police.

She was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital, where she is in the intensive care unit with a broken femur, broken hip and a fractured skull.

Those who know her said she's always had a pep in her step.

"Every time you see her she'd be walking, she walks so prim and proper and she'd just be chewing her gum," her friend, Willa Williams, said.

Her family is asking the public to help find the driver.

"We are seeking the assistance and cooperation of the community in locating the person responsible for the tragic accident that will likely take the life of a beloved family member. ... Our family would appreciate any information that may lead to the person who is responsible being held accountable," the family said in a statement.
