A woman is in the hospital recovering tonight after being shot during a domestic dispute, according to Wallingford police.

Officers were called to 43 Heritage Wood around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.  Police said 54-year-old Leanne Burger-Mestel was found shot in the the upper torso and rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital where she's in stable condition.

Investigators said they tracked down the alleged shooter at his home on First Street in Hamden.

Hamden and Wallingford Police Departments attempted to contact the man and set up a perimeter outside his home.

While police were outside, they said heard what was believed to be a gunshot coming from the man's home. SWAT teams from both departments entered the home and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Police believe the man was in a dating relationship with Burger-Mestel. Officials are not releasing his identity as this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
