Woman Was Sexually Assaulted Behind New Haven Garage: Cops

New Haven police are investigating a sex assault that was reported late Monday night in the Newhallville section of the city.

A woman was walking in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Hazel Street at 11:49 p.m. on Monday when a man ran up to her from behind and tried to rob the woman, police said.

She emptied her pockets and the man told her to follow him behind a garage.

There, he grabbed her jacket, told her he would kill her if she didn’t comply, showed a handgun tucked in his waistband and sexually assaulted her, police said.

The man is described as 5-feet-7 to 5-feet-9, about 170 pounds.

He was wearing a black ski mask, an olive green puffy winter coat and blue jeans at the time and ran on Hazel Street to the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail toward Ivy Street, police said.

Anyone with information should call police at 946-6316 or the Special Investigations Unit at 946-6290.
