Waterbury Man Accused of Strangling Mother During Fight

A Waterbury man is accused of killing his mother at their home on Eastern Avenue.

Liam Dooley, 23, is charged with the murder of his 48-year-old mother, Michele McCarthy. Her body was found inside their Eastern Avenue apartment around 10 a.m. on Tuesday when officers went to check on her, police said.

Dooley is accused of strangling McCarthy and wrapping her body in an air mattress. He initially denied killing his mother but later confessed, according to police.

An arrest warrant shows that Dooley told police his mother bit his hand and scratched him during an argument leading up to the killing.

One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said the McCarthy's 20-year-old daughter became concerned when the mother did not show up at work for a couple days and contacted police.

The Waterbury police forensics unit is processing the scene and detectives are interviewing residents in the complex.

The Waterbury mayor arrived at the scene on Tuesday evening and said the family was "well known" in the city but didn't reveal any details about what they were known for.

Dooley was charged with murder and was placed on suicide watch. He is being held on $1.5 million bond.
