Fishing Tournament for Wounded Veterans Underway

Several groups worked together this morning to help some of our wounded warriors.

About 15 disabled veterans boarded boats and took to the Connecticut River this morning to fish for the fifth annual Tournament of Champions River Fishing event.

Jose Kowalski, of the Fishing Outreach Program, said the event was aimed at teaching disabled veterans to fish and take part in a friendly competition.

“There’s nothing in the world like 19.5 feet of carpet on water and a fishing rod in your hand. It’s probably the best therapy that I know of,” he said.

As part of the competition, each veteran will catch five fish. The participant with the heaviest fish will get a special prize on Wednesday afternoon.

The event was organized by the Riverfront Recapture, Gaylord Sports Association and the Connecticut B.A.S.S. Nation.
