Police Identify Wrong-Way Driver

Several cars and a tractor trailer are involved in the crash

A wrong-way crash closed the Wilbur Cross Parkway in Meriden Wednesday morning.

According to State Police, Janice Tasko, 70, of Cheshire, drove in the wrong direction from the Berlin Turnpike to the interchange where Route 15 and Interstate 91 merge in Meriden, where she hit a tractor trailer and two other cars.

The crash happened at  at 9:45 a.m.

State police received several 911 calls about a car driving in the wrong direction southbound in the Northbound lanes of I-91, according to Lt. Paul Vance. 

A woman who made one of the 911 calls described an older woman in a red car traveling in the wrong direction.

"I'm driving on the Berlin Turnpike in the right lane and there's a woman going in the opposite direction," said the caller.  "She's going like in the wrong direction.  She's going to cause an accident,"

Troopers tried to intercept the car, but the crash happened before they could catch up to it, Vance said.

The Wilbur Cross Parkway was closed northbound between exits 67 and 68 for four hours, while police investigated the crash.  I-91 northbound was closed for a short time to allow Lifestar helicopter to land. 

Tasko was transported to Hartford Hospital by helicopter, where she is listed in serious condition.  Philip Click, 50, of Westport and David Santora, 45, were taken to Hartford Hospital by ambulance. 

Santora is a West Hartford police officer, according to authorities.  His listed in good condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Click received non-life threatening injuries, police said.
