The stem cell transplant that could help a Yale hockey player get rid of her cancer for good is on hold.
According to the Yale University Athletics website, doctors discovered last week that Mandi Schwartz's cancer had returned for a third time. That means she has to get more chemotherapy and radiation before she can receive the transplant.
Schwartz was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia during her junior year at Yale in 2008. After getting chemotherapy, she went into remission in the spring of 2009, but was diagnosed with cancer again in April 2010.
That's when doctors decided that Schwartz needed a stem cell transplant. Two cord blood donors were found and the procedure was scheduled for August 27, until Schwartz's cancer returned.
Schwartz's father, Rick, says the news has not dampened his daughter's determination.
"What a kid! Still wants to work out even after hearing the bad news," Schwartz told Yale.
There is no timeline for when Schwartz will be able to receive the transplant.
