Yale University police are investigating after a racial slur was scrawled on a bathroom stall in the African American Studies Department building.
According to a university statement, the words “Race War Now” were found scribbled on a stall door Thursday afternoon in the building on Wall Street. The police department was notified, and the university facilities department arrived to clean off the graffiti.
"It's pretty terrible, especially in this day and age," said Yale graduate student Brad Walker. "It's silly and inflammatory and pointless."
Police are working to figure out who is responsible for vandalizing the bathroom.
“The sentiment expressed is repugnant, and antithetical to our university’s values and beliefs,” the statement reads. “As we look forward to an inauguration weekend that celebrates all of Yale in its great diversity, we must be mindful of the fact that to threaten or demean even one member of our community threatens and demeans all of us.”
Jonathan Holloway, head of the African American Studies Department, addressed the incident in an email to the department and said the building had not been properly locked, according to the Yale Daily News.
“From the experiences I’ve garnered through living on campus for most of the last decade I believe that this will be a one-time act of stupidity,” Holloway said in the email. He added that the incident served as a reminder that “in this allegedly post-racial age we all still have work to do,” the Yale Daily News reports.
