On the windows of the Yantic Post Office, in between the Valentines, U.S. Postal Service officials have posted notices of an "emergency suspension," directing customers to the Bozrah Post Office, two miles away.

"Oh for heaven's sakes," gasped Cindy Crochiccia, who's accustomed to driving to Yantic on her way from Franklin into Norwich to use the post office. "It's just quaint and convenient and friendly and personable.  It's just a little piece of Americana."

One problem with the operation is the tight quarters inside, clearly visible through the windows.  The Postal Service said the closing is for "safety and security".

"Things have been bad here for many, many years," said Fred Kingsley, a Yantic man who said he's not surprised. "It's very cramped and crowded back in there."

However, some customers with post office boxes wish the Postal Service had sent them to the Norwich Post Office instead of Bozrah.

"It's headed in the opposite direction from where I live, which is right here," said Melanie Brule.

After waiting for the Bozrah operation to conclude its daily closing between noon and one, she went in to get her mail.  Did she find a new post office box?

"How about a bin where the mail was just thrown in along with everybody else's and labeled Yantic mail?" she said.

The Postal Service will study reopening the Yantic Post Office, according to a news release.
