1 Dead, Multiple Families Displaced After Apartment Fire in Somers

One person has died and multiple families are displaced after a fire at an apartment complex in Somers early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters received a call from a neighbor about a fire at the apartments on Sokol Road shortly after midnight.

Crews from Somers, Enfield, Ellington and East Longmeadow responded to the fire to ensure there was enough people to rotate while fighting the fire in the heat and humidity.

When firefighters arrived, they said they found one apartment well involved in fire and crews evacuated all of the other apartments.

Crews made an aggressive interior attack, according to Somers Fire Marshal Chief John Roache. He said most of the damage was contained to the one unit.

One person was found dead in the apartment where the fire started, Roache added. The person's identity has not been released while police notify the family.

The American Red Cross is assisting at least seven families that lived in the building.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
