Tip in Jeweler's Murder Leads Cops to Philly

A tip from another jewler led police to surveillance video of the suspect out of state.

A tip has led police to Philadelphia as they search for the man who killed a Westport jeweler.  New surveillance video shows the suspect at a Philadelphia jewelry store in an area known as Jeweler's Row.  The video was taken just three days before Yekutiel Zeevi was shot in his Westport store.  Westport and Connecticut State Police are now in Philadelphia working with authorities there.

"I would characterize him as someone who knew exactly what he was doing, and was very calculated and extremely dangerous," said Sgt. Jim Kline of the Connecticut State Police.

A new wanted poster now features the man police say is responsible for the death of Zeevi. According to police, the man made two appointments with Zeevi, 65, at YZ Jewelers on the Post Road. During the appointment last Thursday night, the man shot and killed Zeevi while robbing the store.

“The initial video images were obtained from video cameras that were outside of the office. As we’re well aware, the surveillance video was poor at best,” said Westport Police Chief Dale Call.

But a tip from another jeweler led police to a jewelry store in Philadelphia, where they were able to obtain better surveillance photos of the suspect.

He may be driving a "boxy" vehicle, such as a Scion, or a Nissan Cube, according to police.

“What we’re asking for is cooperation from all the area jewelers. They do have some formal and informal alliances. We have been finding out that not all the jewelers tie into those networks of information, so we’ve been asking for cooperation from those jewelers,” Call said.

According to police, the man in the video has been seen in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New York.

Police are also asking for cooperation from the public. Detectives want to hear from anyone who may recognize the man in the photos.
