Travelers Says Worker Attacked in Downtown Hartford

Travelers has sent a company-wide email warning workers to “take extreme caution and watch [their] surroundings” after one employee was attacked by a stranger while walking past the Old State House building in downtown Hartford on Monday morning.

According to the email, the employee was walking to the Travelers Tower from bus stop on Market Street when a stranger lunged at him from the area of the Old State House building and tried to hit him over the head with a metal rod. It happened around 7:15 a.m. Monday.

The employee managed to defend himself and received minor injuries, according to the email.

Travelers corporate security is investigating and is available to walk employees to and from their vehicles late at night and early in the morning, the email says.

Workers said they were surprised to learn the incident had happened in such a well-traveled area.

“You don’t expect it here,” said Mark Small, of Hartford. “There’s just too much traffic. I mean, you’ve always got employees going from building to building.”
