Baltimore Woman Shot by NYPD Killer Identified

Maryland authorities identified the woman shot by the same man who, police said, killed two NYPD officers then fatally shot himself.

Shaneka Nicole Thompson, 29, was shot in the abdomen Saturday by Ismaaiyl Brinsley, officials in Baltimore County said. She remains in critical but stable condition.

Authorities said she is expected to survive her injuries, and they hope to interview her later Sunday, if her condition improves. Police believe Thompson and Brinsley had a previous romantic relationship.

Authorities believe that after Brinsley shot Thompson, he traveled to New York where he approached a marked police car in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn and opened fire, killing two officers.

Metropolitian police Chief Cathy Lanier expressed sympathies to the family and friends of the fallen officers.

"The execution of two young police officers doing nothing more than sitting in their car is shocking and reprehensible," Lanier said. "Hearing this news yesterday, following days of observing tremendous acts of kindness from our police officers, who had been buying and distributing gifts for disadvantaged families in our community, was heart wrenching. This was a tragic reminder that police officers are vulnerable at all times; simply because of the uniform we wear."

"Our hearts go out to families of the victims as well as their friends and fellow law enforcement," Lanier said.
