Pa. Woman Convicted of Murder in Newborn's Pub Bathroom Death

    Northampton County Prison
Amanda Catherine Hein admitted to giving birth to a baby in a pub bathroom, suffocating the child and disposing of the child in a toilet tank.

A woman who admitted giving birth in the bathroom of a northeastern Pennsylvania bar and hiding the newborn in the toilet tank has been convicted of first-degree murder.

A Northampton County jury returned the verdict Thursday against 27-year-old Amanda Hein of Allentown.

She was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Hein pleaded guilty to murder last month but the jury was tasked with deciding on first- or third-degree murder.

Hein said when she gave birth last August in Starter's Pub in Lower Saucon Township, she thought her baby was dead.

An autopsy showed the baby breathed on its own for several minutes but died after Hein placed him in a plastic bag and stuffed the bag in a toilet tank.

Prosecutors said Hein knew the baby was alive.
