Two motorcycle officers in President Barack Obama's motorcade sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital after an accident Wednesday, Miami Police said.

The accident occurred around 9 p.m. on southbound Interstate 95 near where it meets State Road 836, police said.

Sgt. Rufus Devane III, 42, and Sgt. Santiago Cruz, 49, were involved in a crash while approaching an on-ramp, according to police. A preliminary investigation indicated an abandoned vehicle on the shoulder of the road may have contributed to the crash, though the investigation is not complete, police said.

The two sergeants were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. One officer had road rash and the other sustained a back injury and minor facial trauma.

Miami Police said they're investigating the crash.

President Barack Obama had been in Miami for two Democratic Party fundraisers that impacted transit. He left from Miami International Airport at about 9:20 p.m. on Air Force One.

One of the fundraisers was a private event that was being held at the home of a Miami Beach businessman, The Miami Herald reported.

Traffic along I-95 was snarled after the crash.

The incident wasn't the first time Obama's motorcade has been involved in an accident in South Florida. In September 2012, Officer Bruce St. Laurent of the Jupiter Police Department was struck and killed by a pickup truck on I-95 in West Palm Beach, where the president was traveling for a campaign stop.
