Youngest Mayor in New Britain History Sworn In

In a city of more than 70,000 people a 26-year-old with a familiar name is making history.

Erin Stewart has been sworn in as New Britain's youngest mayor ever.

The former Republican legislative aide is the daughter of Tim Stewart, who was mayor for eight years.

Her father was the one to swear her in during an emotional ceremony at New Britain High School.

"Today is a new day for New Britain," said Stewart during her inauguration speech.

Stewart is planning to get right to work assessing the city's finances and also hopes to improve the city's infrastructure and schools.

She also pledged to bring a new era of openness to city hall and plans to bring open office hours back for the public.

"Your voice will be heard.  You will have a seat at my table.  You will all be involved in the conversation," said Stewart.

Last week, Stewart unseated incumbent Tim O'Brien, a Democrat in a largely Democratic city.

She is among the youngest mayors in the United States, but there have been several U.S. mayors in their early 20s, some in their teens. In Dorset, Minnesota, a 4-year-old was reelected mayor this  summer.
