Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul will compete for votes from Connecticut Republicans in the state's presidential preference primary on April 24, state officials said.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill and Republican Party Chairman Jerry Labriola announced the names of the chosen candidates at a news conference on Friday.

After the announcement, Labriola urged the candidates to campaign in the state and meet with voters.

President Barack Obama was also selected to qualify for the ballot; however, a Democratic primary will not occur in the state unless other party candidates petition to qualify for the ballot. Petitions to qualify as candidates must be filed by March 2.

New and unaffiliated voters have until April 23 to register as Republicans for the primary.
