Gov. Dannel Malloy will outline his agenda during his State of the State address before the Connecticut General Assembly on Wednesday and the focus will continue to be on long-term goals, the governor said on the eve of the speech.

"I’m going to do what is the right thing to do, whether it’s popular or not and try to move the state forward," he said.

One of the major portions of Malloy's speech will focus on education reform.

The plan consists of improving early childhood education, strengthening teacher standards and helping to boost low-achieving schools.

He also wants to attract strong teachers and administrators.

The state's fiscal challenges are also expected to be front and center during the upcoming legislative session.

"We have that 800-pound gorilla in the room, that’s the budget," House Minority Leader Larry Cafero said.

Recent figures from multiple agencies show the state is facing a deficit in the tens of millions of dollars.

"It is our intention to end the current year in balance," Malloy reiterated.

Raising the minimum wage and Sunday liquor sales are two proposals that will also be hot topics.

"Some feel it’s long overdue that it should be addressed," House Deputy Speaker Joe Aresimowicz said of Sunday sales. "We’re at a competitive disadvantage."
