U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon said she and her husband will repay private creditors involved in their 1976 bankruptcy.

McMahon had been criticized by Democrat Chris Murphy for failing to repay those debts, despite later making a fortune as chief executive of World Wrestling Entertainment. Documents obtained by The Day of New London found records detailing $1 million in debt at the time of the bankruptcy.

McMahon's campaign issued a statement on Thursday night saying that after seeing the list of creditors for the first time this week, she and her husband began trying to find them.

She said they plan to reimburse the creditors at an amount four times what they were owed, adjusted for inflation.

Murphy's campaign criticized the move, saying she should not have waited nearly four decades.
