Tom Foley Reports Negative Income in 2013

Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley is reporting an adjusted gross income of negative $111,151 for 2013.

Foley on Friday allowed journalists to review a summary of his 2013 federal tax return. Its release had been delayed because the Greenwich businessman's limited liability company had filed for an extension.

The filings reveal that Foley paid $673 in federal taxes and received a refund of nearly $7,000 last year. Foley did not provide his state income tax filings.

Summaries released last month showed Foley has recently experienced wide swings in his income. He reported slightly more than $1 million in adjusted gross income for the 2010 tax year. That dropped to negative $65,705 in 2011 and rose to $20,242 in 2012.

Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy's campaign continued to criticize the wealthy businessman for paying a zero percent effective tax rate for several years. A campaign spokesman said Foley "takes advantage of tax loopholes middle class families can only dream about."

Malloy previously released his tax returns going back eight years. Most of his income comes from his salary as governor, but has been under scrutiny by the Foley campaign for tens of thousands of dollars in rental income that was not heavily taxed.
