Though John Madden retired after nine years as an Oakland Raiders coach and thirty years as a broadcaster, his football input is still considered priceless.

So the NFL has offered him a "special adviser" job that doesn't pay anything.

The NFL announced Thursday that Madden has accepted the position and will serve as an unpaid "special adviser" to commissioner Roger Goodell. Madden will serve as the chairman of the coaches group of the NFL competition committee, and will join Goodell on a weekly conference call.

"John Madden still has tremendous passion for the game and offered to continue to play a constructive role for the league," Goodell said in a statement quoted by USA Today.  "It was an offer we couldn't refuse."

An "offer we couldn't refuse"? That sounds more "bada bing" than "Boom!"

Football fans can't get enough of the grandfatherly ex-announcer, and even Wednesday's iPod Nano launch festivities in San Francisco incorporated a demo of Madden NFL 10 for the iPhone.

That Madden NFL 10 for the iPhone is practically un upgrade over real, live NFL football. Because it still had Madden's voice, instead of that twerp Chris Collinsworth!

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who prefers to refer to him as "Chris Collinsworthless".
