It was a busy Sunday in Puerto Rico for the 17th-ranked Huskies, and that's before they were outpaced by West Virginia, 78-68, in the tournament final.
The school issued this statement about an hour prior to tip-off: "UConn players Omar Calhoun, Rakim Lubin, Dan Guest, and Marcel Lewis have been suspended for tonight’s game against West Virginia due to a violation of team rules. Their status will be reevaluated following the game and the Huskies’ return home. The university, including coaches and players, will have no further comment on the matter."
Coach Kevin Ollie was asked about the suspensions after the game.
"I have no comment on it," he said, via the Hartford Courant. "We have to do what we have to do. They violated team rules, and we'll assess the situation when we get back to Connecticut."
Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore Rodney Purvis, who has been searching for his form in the early season, suffered a ankle injury in the opening minutes of the West Virginia game.
"He was limping around the whole game," Ollie said. "We'll try to get it X-rayed before we leave here and make sure there's no damage in there."
Finally, some good news: senior point guard Ryan Boatright, who averaged 18.7 points a game, was named to the all-tournament team along with Devin Williams of West Virginia, Jordan Sibert of Dayton and Shevon Thomson of George Mason. West Virginia's Juwan Staten was named MVP, while UConn freshman Daniel Hamilton earned honorable mention.
