Former UConn C Alex Mateas Top CFL Prospect

When the CFL holds its annual draft next month, former UConn center Alex Mateas could be one of the first players off the board.

UConn cornerback Byron Jones could be a first-round pick in this week's NFL Draft. He will also likely be the only Huskies player to hear his name called over the three-day event. But when the CFL holds its annual draft next month, former UConn center Alex Mateas could be one of the first players off the board.

According to the CFL's final Scouting Bureau rankings, Mateas is the third-best prospect behind Rice defensive lineman Christian Covington and UNLV offensive lineman Brett Boyko. Yale running back Tyler Varga is fourth.

Mateas, a redshirt senior from Ottawa, Ontario, started all 12 games at center for the Huskies last season. He's also excited about the prospect of playing professionally in Canada. "That would unbelievable, it would be just a dream come true," he said back in December. "I am going to take everything I learned here, apply it to whatever happens to the future."

According to the New Haven Register, scouts from Calgary and Toronto were at UConn's Pro Day last moth.

Varga, meanwhile, had a good showing at the January Senior Bowl and is currently preparing for the NFL Draft.
