Huskies Hanging with the Sooners

The UConn Huskies ran into a very powerful Oklahoma Sooners team at the Fiesta Bowl Saturday night.

At halftime, the Huskies trailed Oklahoma 20-10 in Glendale, Arizona. The Sooners struck early with two touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead. UConn had a chance to put some points on the board, but instead of kicking a field goal in the first quarter, Coach Randy Edsall decided to go for it on a 4th and inches in Oklahoma territory. The Oklahoma defense stopped tailback Robbie Frey short of the first down marker, keeping UConn scoreless in the first quarter.

That changed in the second quarter with a Dwayne Gratz interception of Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones. Gratz ran it back 46 yards for the touchdown, making the score 14-7 Oklahoma.

UConn's defense held Jones and the Sooners offense to two field goals in the second quarter, and the Huskies' Dave Teggart tacked on a field goal of his own late in the half to make it 20-10 at halftime.

The Huskies were playing with some emotion in the game. Junior wide receiver Kashif Moore, wore his number 82 during pre-game warmups, but when he returned to take the field at game time, he was wearing former teammate Jasper Howard's number 6 jersey. Howard was murdered on campus in Oct. 2009. It was the first time anyone had worn the number 6 for the Huskies since Howard's death.
