Star linebacker Antonio Pierce is set to play defense when he testifies before a grand jury at Manhattan Criminal Court in the case involving his former teammate Plaxico Burress.

Pierce said nothing as he got out of his limousine and headed to court wearing a tan suit with a white shirt and loafers around 9:45 a.m. today.

The Super Bowl champ was with ex-Giant Burress at the VIP vestibule of the Latin Quarter nightclub when the wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the thy last November.

After Burress' unlicensed gun went off, Pierce drove his bleeding friend to the hospital and then drove to Totowa, N.J., where he dropped off the Glock at his teammate's house, cops said.

Pierce had no way of knowing the gun was illegal, his attorney said. Both players face top charges of felony criminal weapons possession, a charge with a mandatory 3-1/2-year prison sentence.

He is both a witness and a possible defendant in the case, sources told the New York Daily News.

Burress, who testified yesterday, told jurors he was sorry for bringing the loaded Glock into the nightclub.

"I was truthful. I was honest," Plax said when he left the courthouse after three hours. "And I'm truly remorseful for what I've done, for what happened, for what I did."

"I just want to thank everybody -- family and friends, fans -- for their support."

Giants team owner John Mara ripped into Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau -- saying action against Pierce was "unwarranted" because he had no criminal intent.
