Red Sox Place Chris Sale on 10-Day DL

The team's ace is reportedly suffering from left shoulder inflammation

The Boston Red Sox announced Tuesday that they have placed starting pitcher Chris Sale on the 10-day disabled list with mild left shoulder inflammation, retroactive to July 28.

To fill Sale’s spot on the 25-man roster, the club recalled pitcher Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Left-handed pitcher Brian Johnson will start Thursday's game against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.

Sale, 29, is 11-4 with a 2.04 ERA in 22 starts this season. He leads the majors in strikeouts and opponent batting average and has the lowest ERA in the American League. Before the injury he was considered among the front-runners for the AL Cy Young Award.
