Derek Poundstone can bench press 550 pounds and he can dead lift 900 pounds. While some people tweet about movies, books or who they have meetings with, he tweets about pulling a fire truck in his spare time.

This week, America’s Strongest Man hopes to become the World’s Strongest Man.  Poundstone, who live in Waterbury and is a Naugatuck cop, is one of 32 contenders for the title.

Poundstone lost out in 2008 to Mariusz Pudzianowski, who is in the running again.

Qualifying rounds happen from Sept. 26 to 29 and the finals run from Oct. 1 to 3.

He spoke with the Waterbury Republican-American hours before leaving for Malta.

“I am feeling very good,” he said. “I have done everything I can possibly do to prepare for this competition. I feel very good physically. I am in the best shape of my life, and I have worked much harder during the past year on getting stronger, but I have also made my training event specific. I focused a lot of my training on strongman events.”
