Former UConn star Renee Montgomery will be wearing a Connecticut Sun jersey and Lindsay Whalen has been traded to the Minnesota Lynx.
The Sun and the Lynx announced on Tuesday that they are trading point guards and draft picks, which could actually bring two UConn stars to their local team.
The teams had been talking about sending Sun point guard Lindsay Whalen and the second pick of this year's WNBA draft to the Lynx and picking up point guard and the No. 1 overall draft pick, which is likely to be Tina Charles, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune first reported last week.
"We had a rare opportunity to leverage a high draft pick and turn it into a bigger, more encompassing deal" Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said Wednesday. “There is no doubt our fans will miss everything Lindsay has brought to the Sun over the past six years, though this new chapter could be even more exciting.”
Montgomery and Charles are well known in Sun territory. Montgomery helped lead UConn to a national championship last season and Charles in a UConn center.
Whalen, in turn, is a former star at the University of Minnesota.
“By trading Lindsay and second draft pick to Minnesota, we are able to acquire a young point guard in Renee Montgomery who, in time, can become one of the best guards in our league, as well as acquiring the first pick in this year's college draft," coach Mike Thibault said.
