UConn coach Kevin Ollie won't be in Indianapolis this week for the NCAA Final Four because of a travel ban declared by Connecticut governor Daniel P. Malloy in response to Indiana's controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
University president Susan Herbst made the announcement on Tuesday.
"In support of Gov. Malloy's travel ban to the state of Indiana," Herbst said in a statement. "Kevin Ollie and other members of the UConn men's basketball staff will not travel to Indianapolis for the NCAA Final Four and events surrounding it. UConn is a community that values all of our members and treats each person with the same degree of respect, regardless of their background and beliefs, and we will not tolerate any other behavior."
Athletic director Warde Manuel told the Associated Press that the law is unacceptable and hopes Indiana changes the law before UConn and other schools choose to boycott the 2016 women's Final Four, which is slated for Indianapolis.
''They have a choice to make and I think others have choices to make on whether they'll spend money at the businesses in the state of Indiana,'' Manuel said.
