Giant Wins Aren't Creating Much Buzz

A 3-1 start is greeted with a shrug of the shoulders

Hey, everybody, in case you haven't noticed, the Giants have won three straight games!

Yep, those same Giants who opened up a wing of their own in the hospital to house all their injured players while changing their email address to escape the mountains of angry missives that came their way after an offseason spent catching up on DVR'd episodes of their favorite soap operas.

Judging by the nearly total lack of celebration accompanying those wins, we figured that you stopped paying attention after they opened the season with a bad loss to the Redskins that seemed to confirm everyone's worst fears.

What's that? You're well aware that the Giants have won three straight, two of them on the road in comeback fashion and one of them over the hated Eagles team that's been the beauty to your beast over the last three years?

So why aren't you dancing in the streets, people? This has been as good a start as you could have hoped to see and the schedule for the next three games has more cupcakes than a 3-year-old's birthday party, so things only promise to get better.

Oh, you're sending along a song that explains your lack of excitement about the Giants? But why are you sliding on your sunglasses and looking off in the distance at a nonexistant camera?

Because the song is "Won't Get Fooled Again," and there's no better way to give a capsule review of anything the Giants do before November than to crank up Pete Townsend and the boys while doing your best David Caruso impersonation. Until further notice, the world looks just the same and history ain't changed one bit because Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes in Arizona.

We've been down this road too many times before to get overly enthusiastic about winning a few games in September, even if the last two of them have been emotional thrillers. The Giants have done this every single year that Tom Coughlin's been the coach and in all but one of those years, the Giants have stopped playing once the weather got cold and the schedule firmed up.

Few schedules have been as firm as the one that awaits the Giants after Week Seven so Tom Coughlin has his work cut out for him when it comes to proving that the new boss isn't exactly the same as the old boss.

Coughlin knows the history, he knows that what happens down the stretch is more important than what happens in September and he knows that all of these wins carry the same heft as a bag full of feathers if they aren't matched with wins down the line.

The Giants season has gotten off to a good start, but no one is fooled into thinking that the real season starts anytime before November.
