Storrs Celebrates Women's Victory

Two arrests were made and neither was a UConn student.

It was deja vu for Husky fans.

Students stormed the court at Gampel Pavilion for a second consecutive night as the Husky's women basketball team joined the men as national champions.

About 7,500 fans came to the UConn arena on Tuesday evening for a rally to welcome home Husky men after their win over Kentucky on Monday.

About 2,500, including several members of the men's team, stayed in the arena and watched on large movie screens as the women blew out Notre Dame.

After the final buzzer, they poured out of the arena and began a second night of partying.

UConn released a statement saying things were calm on campus, of af 11:15 p.m. and there were no major disturbances. UConn police made two arrests on breach of peace and reckless endangerment charges. Neither person was a UConn student.

"Thousands of students on campus are cheering the UConn women following their ninth national championship. With both the men's and women's teams winning this week, there's a celebratory mood here. At this point in the evening, we have no serious problems to report. We extend our thanks to everyone who helped make this a positive celebration of our UConn teams," UConn Chief of Police Barbara O'Connor said in a statement.

It's the second dual championship for UConn, which also won the men's and women's titles in 2004. No other Division I school has accomplished that.
