Attention Apple iPad hounds: It's official.

The iPad launch date in the U.S. is Saturday, April 3, with pre-orders starting on March 12. First out of the gate will be the Wi-Fi only models, available in 16GB , 32GB, and 64GB capacities for $499, $599, and $699 respectively.

Apple says the Wi-Fi + 3G models will be available "in late April" — the same date all of the iPad will be available In Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

From Apple:

"Beginning a week from today, on March 12, US customers can pre-order both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple's online store (www.apple.com) or reserve a Wi-Fi model to pick up on Saturday, April 3, at an Apple retail store."

That still doesn't make a lot of things clear. For instance, if you order an iPad from the Apple online store, will it be delivered to you precisely on the rollout date like the iPhone 3GS was last year?

If you don't pre-order an iPad, will there be a shortage, and might you be required to stand in a long line and not receive one? Is there really anything magical and revolutionary about this? Do you even want one, anyway?
