Suspected Sushi Thief Captured

He stole raw fish and a police radio, police said.

Last month, a brazen thief ate sushi as he strolled through the aisles of a Hamden Shop Rite, then stole several boxes and a security guard's radio before fleeing, police said.

When the security officer of the Shop Rite at 2100 Dixwell Avenue approached the man, there was a physical confrontation and the hungry thief stole the security officer’s portable radio then took off in a white truck.

Police searched the area, but did not find the man, so they reached out to the public for help.

Within hours of releasing surveillance images from the sushi shoplifting, people contacted police and identified the man as Michael Zabivinik, 44, of Bridgeport.

Police have obtained a warrant for Zabivinik, who turned himself in to police yesterday.

He was charged with robbery in the third degree and larceny in the sixth degree.

Zabivinik was released after posting a $500 bond is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on December 13.
