What Should I Do with My TV?

TV set with test bars

Are you ready for the big digital conversion?

If I have an older analog television, will I have to throw it away after June 12, 2009?

No. A digital-to-analog converter box will allow you to continue using your existing analog TV to watch over-the-air digital broadcasts. You do not need to get rid of your existing analog TV. In addition, analog sets should continue to work as before if connected to a subscription service such as cable or satellite TV. Also, analog sets should continue to work with gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products that you use now.

What if I want to get a new TV? Can I recycle my old one?

For people who choose to buy a new digital TV to replace their analog version, there are certainly recycling programs available that help recycle old electronics. One recycling program is myGreenElectronics, which has information on recycling programs near you and different disposal options.

Is it a problem with my antenna or can I find these channels at different numbers on the tv i.e. channel 9 can also be seen on channel 43 right now.
  • narkspud Saturday, Apr 25 at 7:02 PM FLAG COMMENT Anonymous (of course) - Broadcast DTV is 100% free of charge. Just stick up an antenna, get a converter box (if you need one), and watch all the TV you want to - in High Definition if your TV is capable of it. A bargain at twice the price!
  • Anonymous Tuesday, Apr 21 at 3:15 PM FLAG COMMENT I firmly believe the air waves should be available to all of us and certainly not for a price. The cable industry is something that beholds us and we are therefore held captive to pay for a device that is clearly uninspiring, unintelligent, and so very American.
  • Pat Cekada Tuesday, Mar 3 at 3:40 PM FLAG COMMENT We signed up with DirecTV thinking this would take care of the problem once the transition takes place only to find out after installation that DirecTV does not carry NBC or CBS in our viewing area. Can we expect NBC to be available to us anytime soon? We have already been told that our viewing area will only carry 3 of Channel 51, so the converter box we already purchased doesn't do us any good, in addition to the fact it ... MORE >
