11/3: The Funny Pages

STRIPPING:  It seems somewhat fitting that one of America's favorite politically charged comic strips turns 40 the same week that we head to the polls.  Yes, Doonesbury is officially over the hill (though not yet over the shark).  And tonight, Doonesbury is celebrating the big 4-0 in New Haven.  Yale is throwing the comic strip and its creator and alum Gary Trudeau a big ole party.  There's an entire day of Doonesbury events.  Trudeau will talk about his classic comic and sign copies of "Doonesbury and the Art of G.B. Trudeau," along with author Brian Walker (son of Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker).  There's also an exhibit featuring the strip from 1970-2001.

L'CHAIM:  Who doesn't love a little adult beverage in the evening.  But forget about the beers, margaritas, shots and all drinks with umbrellas.  At least for tonight, it's time to get a little more sophisticated.  Head to Congregation B'nai Jacob in Woodbridge to learn about the wonderful world of scotch.  The High Spirits!  Scotch Tasting will teach you all the pleasures and complexities of blended scotches and single malts.  Plus, there's plenty of food, music, a raffle and even a putting contest.  The evening will cost you $90.  The scotch will be flowing from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

HELP ME WANDA:  She's been called one of the funniest stand-up comics in America.  Wanda Sykes has basically done it all in the comedy world, from stand-up to writing to sit-coms to movies to late-night talk show hosting and even political activism.  Tonight you can see the brash, brassy Wanda Sykes live at the Palace Theater in Waterbury.  Tickets are $35-$65.  The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
