THE IDENTITY OF A FORMER NBA STAR: In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, motivational speaker and former Cleveland Cavaliers star John Amaechi will be speaking at the at Loomis Chaffee School, in Windsor. Amaechi, who is now a psychologist, will give a public talk on identity called “Embracing the Dream: Multiple Identities and Cross-cultural Perspectives,” in Hubbard Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m. At 17, when he first picked up a basketball, Amaechi was considered “too late to the game” and “not athletic enough” to have any chance of success in the sport, especially overseas. Six years later, he was a starter in the NBA. He is the first and only Briton to hold a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame. It is free and open to the public. Click here for more.

TEST YOUR MUSICAL TALENT: Do you have musical aspirations but are yet to be discovered? Head to the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown for Open Mic with J-Cherry. They’ll supply the congas and a piano. You bring the talent and any other instruments you need. It starts at 7:30 p.m. Click here for more.
