Mystic Penguins Go Hollywood

Some familiar faces to visitors at Mystic Aquarium are making their debut on the big screen.

Mystic Aquarium’s penguin colony join Jim Carrey on the screen in the new movie “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.”

In December 2010, crews came to Mystic to film the birds in their exhibit and one or two of the scenes will be used in the movie.

“Mr. Popper’s Penguins” opens on Friday at theaters nationwide.

Carrey is starring with Carla Gugino and Angela Lansbury in the movie based on a 1938 children’s book about a businessman who unexpectedly inherits six penguins.

To celebrate their Hollywood role, the African penguins will don their tuxedos and walk the red carpet at a private screening at the Palace Theater in Hartford.  Theater guests will have the opportunity to take photos of the penguins and meet their trainers.
