State to Mark Civil War Anniversary With Cannon

Today is the 150th anniversary of the beginning.

Cannons will be sounding off outside the state Capitol on Tuesday to commemorate the Civil War's 150th anniversary.

Today is the anniversary of the day the bloody, four-year war opened with Confederate artillery firing on Fort Sumter in South Carolina on April 12, 1861.

Fort Sumter is holding a commemorate firing at 7 a.m. Shots will be fired by Connecticut's artillery at 8 a.m. in what organizers say is the only northern response.

More than 40 infantry re-enactors are taking part in the ceremony. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is expected to deliver remarks before ordering the firing of 10 cannon on the Capitol's north lawn.
