Tennis's Isner Setting Sights on Pilot Pen

Ranked #55 and rising

After giving Andy Roddick a run for his money at this weekend's Legg Mason Tennis Classic in D.C., John Isner has agreed to play at New Haven's Pilot Pen Tennis Tourney starting this weekend.

While he is a towering 6'9", his skyrocketing rank is what has led people to call him one of tennis's rising stars.  The North Carolinian with a super-strong serve has jumped more than 40 places in the rankings to 55.  And he's set to break the top 50 mark soon.

Tournament director Anne Worcester announced the wildcard Monday. "We now have a quartet of American men in the field, and the possibility for adding more exists through qualifying and with two remaining wildcards still to be granted," she said in a press release.

Isner joins Nikolay Davydenko, Gilles Simon, Tommy Robredo, Mardy Fish, Sam Querrey and Taylor Dent on the men's side.

Defending champ Caroline Wozniacki, Flavia Pennetta, Marion Bartoli, Amelie Mauresmo and Deminika Cibulkova are competing for the women's title.

The tournament is held in New Haven with qualifying play starting this weekend.  Competition runs from August 21-29.
